Betta Fish Tail Types and Patterns

Betta Tail Types and Patterns

There are many different breeds, tail types and patterns of Bettas. I don’t think you can actually list them all, but I’m going to try to do as many as I can.

Tail Types

The Veil tail is the most common breed of Bettas. Their tails arch up, then float down, appearing to look a a veil; this is how they received the name ‘Veil Tail’. Veil Tails are easily found in pretty much any fish shop.

Crowntails received their name from their spiky tail and fins. They are very unique and popular. Crowntails can also be found in a lot of fish stores, but definitely not as often as Veil Tails.

Halfmoons are also very popular. They obtained their name from their beautiful caudal tail, which is the shape of a halfmoon and spreads at a 180 degree angle.

THE DELTA TAIL (No Abbreviation)

A Delta tail is the right name for any single tailed non-Halfmoon Betta. A non-Halfmoon is when the tail has straight caudal edges just like a Halfmoon, but they don’t reach 180 degrees.

The Super Delta is similar to a Delta Tail, but an improved version of branching. It’s amazing caudal fin extends between 120-160 Degrees.

The double tail Betta, as you can tell by its name has its caudal tail split in two equal lobes rather than one. They have two caudal peduncles.
While flaring, their tail almost makes a full circle. They have shorter bodies than other tail types, leaving them more prone to Swim Bladder problems (read BETTA DISEASES). Double tail bettas are often crossed into other strains, as they have lovely broad dorsals.

Thank you for this photo, Matt Thomas.

THE SPADE TAIL (no abbreviation)

Spade tail Betta’s aren’t common, and you don’t really see them anymore. Their caudal tail has a wide base, that narrows to a small point, just like a spade.

THE ROUND TAIL OR FAN TAIL (no abbreviation)

The Round Tail Betta’s are single tailed Betta’s with round edges. They are often confused with Halfmoons, but halfmoons should have a ‘D’ shaped caudal, with sharp edges, while the round tail have rounded edges.

The Rose Tail Betta was developed by trying to breed the perfect Halfmoon. It’s fins, especially the caudal have excessive branching and overlapping which gives the appearance of a rose.

THE FEATHER TAIL (no abbreviation)

The feather tail Betta is very similar to the rose tail, but tends to have a more ruffled appearance.

The Plakat is a short-finned version of the common Betta. They are usually more active then long-finned Betta’s, properly because they don’t have the long elaborate fins to slow them down. Also, they are known to have more resistance to disease, which makes them favorable to many Betta owners.

Comb tail or Half Sun Betta’s are usually produced with crossing a Veil Tail and a Crowntail. They are not as spiky as the Crowntail, but do have a slight pointed appearance.

Even though the giant Betta isn’t a tail type, I thought I’ll add it in anyway. As you can tell from its name, the Giant Betta really is a giant sized Betta. They were first bred in 1999, where a very large Betta was found. Finding another large Betta, they were bred together, and then the production of those Bettas were bred again, and again until a line of Giant Betta’s were created. Giant Betta’s today can come in any of the above tail types, and are just the same as normal Bettas, just a great deal larger. Halfmoon giant bettas are less common than plakat giants, as halfmoon giant bettas often have trouble holding up the huge amount of finnage.
This is a photo of my half-giant male (yes they get bigger than that!) against a standard sized male.

Tail Patterns and colours –

Solid colours are properly the most common Betta colour, and as you most likely guessed from the name, they have one single colour from the tip of their head right down to their fins. There is many solid colours available. Such as:

Red is the most common along with blue, and is a very dominant colour when breeding.

Raspberry 3B29
This boy is extended red. Extended red is an intense version of red, that covers the betta from head to tail, included pectoral fins (fins on the side of their body).

Along with red, blue is the most common Betta colour. It is also a very dominant colour when breeding. There are three different shades of blue –

Steel Blue

Royal Blue

Some Royal Blues seem to have a purplish tint to them.

Thank you for this photo, Matt Thomas.

The Betta colour cellophane basically has no colour. The body is a fleshy colour, and their fins are transparent.

Most white opaques tend to have impurities such as black outlining, or red wash. The true white opaque is very hard to produce.

Minus the red.

Copper Betta’s can come in a light gold, a deep copper, a red-copper and some are even a bit purplish. Their colours truly shine in bright light or sunshine.

Red Copper Halfmoon fry I bred.

Black Betta’s, like the copper, come in a few different shades. There are three different shades of black: melano, black lace, and super black. Sadly, melano black females are infertile – they produce eggs, but due to the way the melanin protein clump together, it is fatal to the embryo, and the eggs fail to hatch.

Super Black Betta by Matt Thomas. Thank you for the photo.

Bi-colour Betta’s have two different solid colours. Their body will be one colour, and their fins will be another colour. Now, I can’t cover every one, because well, their is as many as every combination of all the solid colours imaginable.

Cambodian Betta’s come in three different shades: Red, blue and green. Cambodians have a fleshy colour body and either a blue, red or green fins.

Chocolate Betta’s bodies are usually dark brown or black; but are sometimes dark blue or green! They have gold or yellow-orange fins.

Thank you, Matt Thomas for this photo.

Butterfly Bettas have a solid coloured body, and their fins  are divided into two separate colours, which are ideally symmetrical. They can come in any colour combination. Butterfly is a marble trait.

Marble Betta’s are now becoming more, and more common. They usually have a colouring of blue or red with a pale base. A marble Betta has uneven patterns all over their body. They can be one colour one week, another the next week. As they age, they tend to slow down colour changing.

This photo was taken when I first got Apache.

Apache 002 1
This photo was taken of Apache about 2wks later.

Piebald Betta’s have a fleshy coloured face no matter what their body colour is. The Piebald’s body is usually fairly solid, but can have any pattern, such as a butterfly or marble.

Grizzle Betta’s are uncommon, and have either a pastel or opaque body with random flecks and spots of iridescent colouring. Each fin will also have grizzle patterning. The body and fins should have exactly two different iridescent colour. Grizzle Betta’s which show 50% iridescence and 50% pastel or opaque body is preferred.

Betta’s that are said to have masks, are referred to having their face the same colour as their body; where most Betta’s face’s are a darker shade than their body.

Thanks to Matt Thomas for this photo.

A newish pattern that is becoming increasingly popular. Dragon Betta’s usually have a bright, strong base, such as red, with their scales highlighted in a pale iridescent colour. Their scales seem to resemble that of a lizard – or dragon.
See how these dragon Betta’s scales are highlighted?

Orange dalmatian Betta’s are not really common. They have a pale orange body with darker orange spots of different sizes all patched around there body. Also known as Apricot Spots.

Thankyou, Betty Splendens for photo permission.

A mustard gas Betta is a Betta with either a green or blue body with yellow or orange fins. They are a popular bi-colour pattern. They can be similar to chocolate Betta’s.

Multicolour Betta’s do not fit into any of the above listed colours/patterns. They have at least three different colours in them that don’t have any sort of order. Muticolours are sometimes referred to as ‘mutts’, and can easily be found in many pet stores.

  1. I really enjoyed this site. It helped me figure out what tail type my betta (Bubbles) was. I really liked the green and white butterfly betta. The pictures are awesome. Very clear.

  2. My son bought a baby betta fish that has a pointed tail… with not feathering at all. What would this be? Female? Or an abnormality?

  3. Hello [Anonymous]
Do you know how old the fish is, you say baby – it could very well just be a young Veil Tail.
I wouldn't think abnormality, POSSIBLY female, it's hard to tell without a picture. Do you happen to have a picture (post a link)

Good luck in id'ing your Bettas type – and caring for him/her!

  4. I have chocolate female but all the males I want to breed her with end up dead. . . Or really injured Shes terrible and shes made a bubble nest once too! Could you tell me what I could do? Theres a white egg in her body just like all the other females. Can you help me qith the finding out of what her problem is?

  5. Hello,
It could be that you have a very aggressive female on your hands.
Do you introduce the pair slowly? When spawning bettas, it's viable that the pair have a relationship.. they must be introduced carefully, and never just 'put together' (not sure if you do this or not).

Some females do blow nests.. I had one that blew one just as nicely as some of my males.
Although, you could possibly have a male PK. Some males have what looks like an egg spot.

Could you possibly link to a picture?

    Hope this helps,

  6. i have a 10 gallon fish tank, and its been maturing for almost three weeks, so when can i put a betta in there? And how old do they have to be to spawn? This is my first time having a betta but i have done alot of reasearch and i am interested in breeding bettas.

  7. I have a blue/red crown tail that I bred with a normal cambodian red and white female. I ended up with this one female that is white with the lightest hint of light lavendar in the cambodian pattern. What would this be called?
I also ended up with white and blue STRIPED female. literally horizontal blue lines on a white body. all the males mostly looked like the father or had red and white. these 2 were the only different ones. Luckily they are female and easier for me to keep and breed. I wonder what I should breed them each with? Any suggestions?

  8. Hello,
Could you post a photo, please? Sounds like a nice Cambodian.

As for the striped, horizontal bars across the body are stress stripes, or in juvi bettas – juvi lines that will eventually fade.
As for choosing who to breed with, I would mainly look for form, rather than colouring – colouring comes next.
Have a peek here, for info on form for crowntails.

    Hope this helps you,

  9. Very helpful, thank you! I confirmed that my new betta is indeed a halfmoon with a grizzle coloration!

  10. Hi there! I have a question about my friend's white betta and I hope you can help. When we first brought it home it was solid white with the exception of it's fins picking up an iridescent blue color in the light. In the last month it started developing black stripes across it's fins. We want to make sure this isn't some sort of fin rot or other disease. I have a picture for your reference, if you don't mind taking a look and telling me what you think? Thanks!!

    • Hello, Jenni.
Lovely boy your friend has there! He definitely has the marble gene, meaning he will change his appearance. As he ages, the colour changes will slow. I personally love marbles, although they CAN be frustrating when they change so suddenly!

Nothing to worry about at all. Although I would keep an eye on that barrel, it looks like it has rough edges (may tear finnage).

  11. gee, i feel a bit silly. i guess you're the "other" site on the web that knows what a spadetail is. classic look before you leap story huh? but gender is still my mystery concerning my fish and to be even more of a pain in your butt, my original post is on your betta gender page. ooooops but still need your advice please!

  12. My husband and I want to start breeding bettas as a hobby. We are most instereted in the halfmoon and superdelta bettas. The only issue we have run into is finding bettas. Any suggestions? We have googled, contacted the IBC, and contacted our local betta club so far.

    • Hello Jessica,
Firstly remember to research lots before you start breeding (looks like you already are – good on you!), be prepared for lots of fry, and have your live food cultures set up.

As for helping you find a pair, it depends on your location. Unless you're in Australia, I can't currently offer you a lot of contacts.

I would also try but contacting the IBC & your local betta club is definitely the way to go. 🙂

      Good luck,

    • Hello Kayla,
Could be for a variety of reasons.

Maybe your betta is unwell, and has a loss of appetite. Does he have any other symptoms? Look for clamping of fins, dust looking stuff covering his body (under a light.. that could be velvet, check the disease section for more info).

What are your water parameters, and temperature? Maybe something could be off there. What is your tank set up?

Or maybe the food is just too big, or he doesn't like it. You occasionally do get the fussy eater… has there been a change in diet, assuming this is a new problem?

Sorry I couldn't be a little more precise in my answer, just need a little bit more information.

  13. I named my betta Bubbles! I named her that because that was the cutest female betta name and also I am fond of your site! I know you had a betta named Bubbles! My female betta is either really royal blue or purple!

    • Congrats on your Betta, very cute name. Yep, my first betta ever was a royal blue veiltail named Bubbles. There aren't any true purple bettas, so you're little Bubbles would be royal blue.

Thanks for the kind comment. 🙂

    • I'm so sorry to hear Bubbles has past (and sorry for the late reply!)

I hope when you're ready it doesn't put you off having another betta. 🙂

    • so there is more than just me that named their betta Bubbles.. I am on my second male vail tail Betta and is doing great!! however I recently bought a double tail Betta I feed both Betta's the same pellets and feed them 3 to 4 twice a day.. but my double tail male seems like it don'r like it well so what other food can I feed it?

    • I feed my betta with freeze dried bloodworms and he love it so much. He can even finished 20 pcs of it with no problems 🙂

  14. So glad I found this blog! I've had many Bettas over the years, but am down to two now. Dragon is a plain ol' red veiltail with a bit of purple highlighting; I couldn't resist him, since he was so spunky and had such a nice bubble nest in his cup, and when I turned him loose in his 1 gallon tank, he started zooming around and doing loop-de-loops. What a little character. My new Betta, who will live in my classroom in a 1.5 gallon cube, is Cutter – named because, though he was labled as being a halfmoon, he seems to have a chunk cut out of his back fin. He's still plenty lively, though, and I'd never seen a color like his… he seems to have a blue body and red fins – but he looks like he's been frosted with a white glaze! I'll have to take a picture… I'd say it's something like a copper or a dragon, but not as nice as the pics here. Maybe you can help me with a definite ID? Thanks!

  15. By the by – how does one acquire a giant betta, and what size tank is recommended? They sell "king" bettas at Petco, but they're a very dark blue-black with reddish finnage, and I'd rather have someone whose eyes I can see!

    • Hello,
I find giant Bettas do quite well in a 20L tank (5.2G). Of course, bigger is always better.
King bettas are commonly giant bettas, or at least half giants… so bigger than standard.

Hope this helps, if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask. 🙂

    • Thankyou for the lovely comment!
Warrex is gorgeous, I really do like him.
He is a black orchid traditional plakat. Not Halfmoon plakat (HMPK) because his caudal (tail fin) is rounded at the edges… also his anal is a bit longer. Lovely find!

      All the best,

  16. We just welcomed Captain America the Betta. It appears that it's a dragon scale crown tail male. will post a pic when I can.

  17. My little brothers and I got 3 new bettas. They are kept in seperate tanks, and thanks to your website, I know their coloration and tail types. I have a pretty Delta Tail male with beautiful pale blue and green coloration(I named him Moonstone).
My two youngest brothers share a completely royal blue Crowntail male they named after a wrestler (John Cena). And my eldest younger brother got a Delta Tail male with bright red fins and a vivid violet body. His name is Sushi, and he's very pretty, but your website said that there is no such creature as a purple betta.
Is there something wrong with Sushi?

    • Hello!
How lovely to hear you and your brothers have some new bettas, very exciting.
Your Bettas sound absolutely gorgeous! Lucky you to have such pretty pets. I like their names, too.

As for Sushi, I wouldn't say anything is wrong with him.
There aren't any true purple Bettas, but some bettas have red colouring, over a royal blue base, which can appear violet. I'm guessing this is what Sushi is… nothing to worry about!

Thankyou for commenting, and feel free to ask any questions you may have.
      Happy caring for them,

    • How lovely! Alexa is very literate, definitely something to be proud of. 🙂
I got my first Betta when I was 10 years old, was very exciting for me.

  18. I have a male crowntail betta in the grizzle color pattern. I didnt know that his color pattern is very uncommon.
I also have a white male delta tail betta.

  19. What a fantastic website. I've greatly enjoyed visiting and will be returning. Thank you for your labor of love.

  20. Hi there i love this site and i was wondering i have a female betta and i was wondering if I could place another female in the tank with her the tank is big enough to as well. My beautiful red and silver half moon betta passed away a week or 2 ago so i want to put another fish in.

    • Hello Kerara.

I'm sorry you've lost your HM girl, she sounded lovely.
You can keep female bettas together – but they have a pecking order you must be mindful off. It's not recommended to keep any less than five females together, any less and the aggressive turns from nips to attacking each other constantly. The more females there are, the more spread out the aggression is.

It also depends on the fish's personality. Sometimes you will get that bully that will just not be friendly enough for a community tank.

Another point to remember about the pecking order – when you first add them, you will notice slight aggression for the first few days. Just leave them, unless it is extremely violent. After a few days they should settle down. If you take a fish out for whatever reason, or add another fish, they will start to establish the pecking order again.

I hope this helps you, please don't hesitate to ask any further questions.

  21. Is it strange that I've only cycled my filtered (and with moss-ball) 1.75 US gal. tank for a week, and my h2o quality is good? I've kept other tanks for a while, so I know the deal. I've never kept a Betta Splendens, though, and don't want to jump the gun and kill one.

    • Hello Scott.
I don't think your tank would be cycled yet. Tanks need a few weeks at least to become established, and before that they need an ammonia source to get the cycle started.

Have a quick google about cycling tanks, as I currently don't have an article for such (in the process, I plan to be updating the site shortly).

I normally cycle my tanks with fish – add your betta and keep an eye on the water, water changing as needed .

  22. I have two vieltial betta in a 10 gallon tank with a divider. when i fist put them together they were good then i separated them. but now he keeps wanting to attack her.

    • Hello.
Bettas are called Siamese Fighting Fish for a reason. They are aggressive. You can keep them together with the divider happily, just don't let them have access to each other, or they will fight.

    • Thankyou for the feedback.
Deltas have no official abbreviation, so you can call them DeT's if you like, but it isn't recognised as a proper abbreviation.

  23. Hi there! Firstly, I love your site. I've been researching betta breeding for about 5 years now (since I was 12, LOL) and I finally have a male I really want to breed. His name is Quantum Singularity (I call him Quan) and he's a purpley copper delta with some red wash. I got him when he was really young, and he was raised with guppy fry, and he's never even tried to eat one! Great dad potential! My question is, what color female should I breed him with? I definitely want to stay away from introducing any more red, so I was thinking maybe a white opaque or a good steel blue? And definitely a halfmoon. Thanks for the help!

    • Hello! Thanks for the comment. 🙂

Quan sounds lovely. I would cross him with a copper HM female. If she doesn't have red wash, that should reduce it in the offspring.

A clean white opaque would also be another good option.

  24. I don't know what color to call my betta. He's pink but looks more orange/peachy in bright light. Do you think I could link you to my Picasa web album so you can see a picture? Or should I use something else?

  25. Thank you! The Petco near my house has had an interesting selection of bettas lately. My sister and I couldn't resist. 🙂

  26. Hello,
I have found your website very helpful. I am getting a Betta soon! But I have one question: Would a 2 or 3 gallon glass container be good for one Betta? Or is that too small?
Thanks again for this awesome website!

    • Hi,
That's okay! And I have a Betta now living happily in a 2 gallon bowl with a heater! His tank is 26 degrees Celsius, is that a good temperature?
      Thanks for helping me!

    • Hello, experienced some strange technical problems, so really sorry for the reply. All seems to be running smoothly now, however (shall try and reply sooner in future!)

26ºC is a perfect temperature, I'm sure he's very happy with that!

  27. yay now i know what fish are i had to find out my comb tail betta is adude by putting a veil tail FEMALE in the tank the was a turkey chase it took about 1 minute to get the male out i now need a name for formly known as janalle so could you help me out sarah

    • Hello Christopher.
I'm definitely not the person to ask for naming ideas, I have trouble naming my own animals! Naming is definitely a personal preference though, so can't really help out all that much.

In future, if you need help with the sexing of your fish – feel free to send me a link to a photo, rather than sticking them in with another Betta; as that could be very stressful and possibly fatal! I'd love to help out otherwise if you need it.

  28. Thank you for this immensely helpful website!
It helped me finally identify one of my female bettas as a grizzle double tail with blue and pinkish fins. 🙂
I'd like to hear your opinion on something I've noticed with my male betta, Daniel, though. Ever since I got him, around 2 years ago, he's never once flared at anything. Not even at his mirror image. (I sit right next to my fishtank most of my time so I'd notice if something was up)
Have you ever before heard of or owned such a relaxed male? I'm just wondering because most betta owners I told this tell me he's probably sick/female/not right in the head =_=
Daniel is definately a male veiltail, actively swims around the tank together with my 2 female bettas, is inquisitive and his scales and fins are bright and in excellent condition. Water values are also good.
There is no aggression in my fishtank besides the occassional 1.5 second chase and there's never any fighting/nipping.
I'd just really like to know if you've heard of this before and what might be the cause of his relaxed nature.

    Many thanks in advance!

    • Hello Carina,
Glad you've identified your Bettas colouring, that female sounds gorgeous. 🙂

I have had a few male bettas that have been quite timid. As long as your water parameters are fine, and their requirements are met, then it's nothing to be worried about. Every Betta has a different personality – and sometimes you just get those timid boys! Daniel sounds like he's well cared for, so I think this is the case.
With these males, I often use them in community tanks with peacefully schooling fish.

    • Hello,
      I appreciate the comment, thankyou.

However, a half sun is another name for a combtail. I have heard a halfsun be referred to as a full crowntail halfmoon as you suggested, but from my knowledge, and from the knowledge of well known Betta experts, it is a misconception.

I can't seem to be able to open that link, sorry.

      Thanks for your comment,

    • Hello Felicity,
I wouldn't recommend it. While females can be kept together, they do have a pecking order which is established through little bickers. I would have at least five females to a tank, any less and the aggression doesn't get spread around and they fight.

  29. My sisters and I recently just bought a male Mustard Gas crown tail, as our royal blue VT died.
It took me a bit to figure out just what color variation he was, but when I found this site, it made things much easier!

Peaches (as my younger sisters call him b/c of his fins), is a dark blue color, with a brown head and back, with a 'peachy' apricot colored caudal fin along with the one on his belly.

    • Hello,
Mustard Gas is one of my favourite betta colourings! I'm glad I've helped you identify what colour he is. 🙂
      Peaches sounds lovely.

  30. Thankyou! This website was very helpful! I now know my betta is a Royal Blue Veiltail. My friend once had a yellow halfmoon and a white veiltail. Thankyou so much, I plan to get a black melano or a marble.

    • Hello,
Longfin (veil tails) is dominant over short fin (plakats), so the fry will all be veiltails but carry the plakat gene. Depending on the veiltails genetic background you may or may not get a couple plakats in there – but I'm assuming this is a pure veiltail so won't happen.

As for colouring, Red is a dominant colour… but you don't mention what colour the plakat is so I can't help with the results.

  31. Ihave a gorgeous crowntail, captain, but his colours are strange. He has a black head, dark blue body, and his tail is mainly red tipped with white. Unfortunately, he got fin rot, so his white is only just apparent. He is healing, and is very curious. But i was wondering, is there a way to make his tail hel better? He has a 5 gallon tank, did have 2 brisstlenose, they died, a mix of plants, a place to hide and a leaf to rest on.

    Yes, he is very spoiled!;)

    • Hello, sorry for the late reply.
If you could send in a photo I could definitely help with identifying his colouring for you.

I've found that Indian Almond leaves (I get mine from ), a bit of salt, and waterchanges help with fin rot. You may need medication if it is bad.

  32. Hi Sarah!

I got a veil tail male betta today, and I've been trying to figure out his colors. His body is a distinct solid purple and his fins are solid red. So he is definitely some sort of bicolor, but I'm not sure if he'd be considered Cambodian or not, because of his purple body.

What are your thoughts? I can include a picture if you'd like.

Thanks for your time! Your site is amazing and so helpful! (:

    • Here's a photobucket album of some pictures I took today. I took them after he ate so his tummy is pretty big haha.

Anyways, I'm inclined to think he's not Cambodian because his body isn't entirely solid purple (since his head fades back to red) and not fleshy colored like all Cambodians I've seen.

And I know there aren't any true purple Bettas, so I'm not sure if I'm even correctly identifying his body color.

What are your thoughts? It doesn't really matter, I'm mostly just curious (:

      Thanks Sarah!

  33. Hello,
Looks like you have a red veiltail – he does have some overlaying iridescence which is making him look purplish – but he is still red. I wouldn't call him cambodian.
He's quite a cute little boy!

  34. I'm thinking of getting a dragon scale witch kind do u think r the best eye catcher.Joey

    • Hello Joey,
Can't really answer your question as taste differs from person to person, you will have to see what you personally find the best eye catcher. I personally love copper dragons or platiums, but many people love blues or red dragon scales.

  35. Great information! I never particularly liked bettas then my son gave me a steel blue delta tail for Christmas. We named him Beethoven. We have thoroughly enjoyed his company on the dining room table as our centerpiece. When we sit down to eat he will come to the side of his bowl to see what we're doing. We usually give him a nibble, too. Just brought home a gorgeous dragon scale crown tail, creamy body with blue/red fins. Thinking of naming him Bach. Looking at your photos lead me to believe he might be marble. I'll have to take pictures to document color changes. Thanks for your help in identifying them!

  36. thank you very much i have bought a betta is name is blue sky someone is asking what is it ang now i know he is a butterfly delta tail im so happppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppy for him

    • Hello, I'm glad you've been able to figure out what type your betta is. Butterfly deltas are gorgeous, all the best in caring for Blue Sky.

  37. While this is a very interesting article, and I learned a lot, I see you have missed a Betta. The Elephant Ear Betta. I find this breed to be very fascinating, and would love to see something up about them.

    • Hello,
Thanks for the feedback. When I wrote this article Elephant ears/dumbo bettas were still in the minority and were no where near as popular as they've become today. I have been meaning to add them in, thanks for the reminder – I'll make a note to edit this article shortly.

  38. Hi, I have a double tail Betta boy whose body is black and white speckled and his fins have thin short streaks of either black, coral, or teal and the rest of the fin is completely see through. Is there a name for Arnold's color type? 🙂

  39. Hi,first of all you have a great site! I have just bought a betta and it looks like half crowntail (the bottom) and half veiltail. Is that even normal? His color I think is melano black

    • Hello,
I'll go by the names of the photos hopefully that's correct.
Jelly Bubble appears copper crowntail, but has a lot of red wash.
Christmas looks like a royal blue halfmoon.
Goldie is hard to tell from the lighting, he could be a few different shades but I'd just say non red (yellow) halfmoon.
      Barbie is a multicoloured halfmoon.

      Hope this helps,

  40. Happy hallowen everybody look at your betta at throw it a kiss before going trick or treating and give him some treat like a pellet! 🙂

  41. I am guessing you guys ask too much question for whosoever that own this site. Why would you have answer when you not dedicated?

    • Hello,
I am sorry if I have not responded to your previous messages, although I cannot pinpoint what they are.
I would like you to understand I solely run this website, and receive hundreds of messages daily. It is difficult to sort through and very time consuming.
Additionally, it states on the sidebar that I may be late in responding, because at the time being I have a lot of life commitments and things are a little crazy at the moment. I made this blog to help educate those who are searching for information, and to help others with their bettas where I can. In no way am I obligated to answer anything, I do so out of my own free will because I choose to.
I think it is incredibly rude for you to demand such information.

Most questions have already been answered in the articles themselves, or at very least within past comments. Did you take the time to read them?

  42. i recently brought a Betta (Dragon Coloured) and he appears to be either a Half Moon or Over Half Moon i could be wrong but that's just my thoughts. His colours are very unusual looking to me. He has a black head with a thin black line outlining his fins and tiny black spots on his fins. He has like a green based turquoise colour, but if you look closer or under a light he has a gold/yellow and blue throughout his fins and body. Is that a normal colour combination for a Dragon?

  43. Hi Sarah, beautiful website!!!! I have a 3 year old male veil tail betta named Chateau De Munn and he isn't really eating and he's pale, he's really lost a lot of his coloring but now he tries to swim and just sinks!!! Please help me!!! Also, what's the right kind of water for a betta tank? I think he's pretty much gone but if I can do something I will. Thx?

  44. Hi Sarah, beautiful website!!! My male veil tail Chateau De Munn is 3 years old but he's really sick. He has white splotches, is pale, inactive and doesn't eat!!!! I think he might have fish tuberculosis! Please help!!! Thx

  45. Thank you. this site helped a lot!. 🙂 my betta is steel blue delta, which i got a week back. he was in a very dirty water when i got him, he is very active and looks so healthy. but he has a thin strip of white color running along its fin and tail edges, his tail has a black strip in the middle. and jaw is silver in color, some people say its a tail rot and advised me to give him salt treatment for a week, i did but i see no changes. and he also has tiny little spots on his tails and fins same as in your pic of steel blue betta . are those things abnormal? should it be worried about? if so, is there any cure for them. Thank You in advance 🙂

  46. 47. Hi I would like to ask if its normal for a betta fish to make a bubble nest even though it hasn't seen a female betta? Thankyou

  48. Hi, just wanna ask. why does my betta keeps making bubble nest even though it have not yet closure or seen any female betta? is it natural? Thankyou! 🙂

  49. I didn't know if I skipped over this one on the list, but I have a Betta who has a pale/cream body and then the fins are cream but when the light catches on them they shine with all the colors of the rainbows. Is this common?

  50. I haven't found my beta type yet! It is so odd his tail looks like a middle finger sticking up, with fins on either side, and that's just his tail.

  51. is their anyway bettas can try to communicate with their owners? My baby female crowntail (Winter) when I go up to the tank, she opens her mouth for a second, and even I tried doing it back to her once and she did it right back! also Winter gets very hyper when I come up to the tank, and I when I go to the other side of her tank, she follow me, does that mean she likes me? awesome site by the way!

  52. I have an extended red VT
    his name is Lava

I also had a butterfly crowntail that was blue red and purple
its name was Hawaiian chicken (ikr I was super bad at naming my fish)

recently my fished passed it was an extended red spade tail
it was old and sick when we got him 🙁 he only managed a few days.
    His name was magma.

  53. Ive had bettas all my life. I love them. Thank you for your site…informative and accurate. I really get pissed when I go to any fish store and see all the bettas in tiny plastic cups stacked up like boxes. They all look so depressed and are frozen still. In my opinion…its cruelty and neglect. Can anything be done to change this barbaric treatment of bettas?

  54. Great piece of information. I m pretty new in this field. So read several times. Got excited and will procure good brooders and start breeding. Thaks a lot. Pls share your experiences.

  55. Hello, Awesome blog/website you got going here, i love betta fish. I want to send you a picture of my fish, he's a delta tail male, marble colored i believe, like steel blue body with outlines of black and a multi colored red and blue fins. (I think he looks gorgeous and i got a really nice photo of him for you to post on your website). Also, i wanted to breed him and i wanted recommendations of the female i should chose. If you can back to me, it would be much appreciated and thank you.

  56. Hello,
I have a male Veil tail Betta named Thowra that I got over a year ago. I am interested in what his coloring would be considered. I have looked through your descriptions and pictures but can't decide on which he would best be described as. Please help me.

    <a href=";

I hope one of these work for you. I am sorry for it being upside down.
    Thank you.

  57. I got another betta today and I am unsure of what to call him. My other VIel tail is named King. My new one is a half moon betta. He has a black head and a deep blue body. His fins are mostly blood red with black lining and a half tiny bit of bright blue. He's very active and oh he has black going down his back. Any name ideas?

  58. HI!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. Hi, I was looking after a friends fish while she was on holidays and I woke up one morning to find he was dead. We then went and bought her another fighter when he also died before we could give him to her. Do you know why?

  60. Love your website! find out what colours and tail types my two bettas are – (Destiny and moonshadow)Moonshadow is a royal blue and turqouise half sun x viel tail and Destiny is a golden copper plakat I am planning to breed them do you know what the tail type and colour will turn out like?

  61. hello sarah,
Firstly I love your work on this site 🙂
And secondly I am breeding my bettas they were conditioned properly:letting them see eachother before I let them in with each other fed them high protein pellet foods and bloodworms the females belly was full of eggs she had breeding stripes as well and the male was flaring showing off and had a bubble nest I let them in with each other….. but not breeding? they see eachother but the male doesn't care? sometimes I see him trying to lure her to the nest but she just hides. They've been in with each other for nearly a day now. The temperature is 26 degrees and the PH level is 7.0 is there anything I'm doing wrong? Also any idea on how the fry would turn out the male is a royal blue with slight hints of turquoise on his tail. I don't know what colour to call my female she has a dark but fleshy coloured body and has Iredescent multi coloured fins?

  62. Hello
Awesome information. I have not had a Betta in over a decade and the world has changed.
The first Betts I had bless his little heart was a blue veil tale that lived in a 20 oz bowl for over four years. He sat on the kitchen counter and begged for food at breakfast and dinner and his water was changed once a week. No light, no heater poor thing.
Information is knowledge…I now have a half moon juvenile I saw at a pet store I am so in love with. Named him Nemo.
I received a self cleaning tank for Christmas. Finally bought Nemo and now I find out I am a bad bad fishy Mom.
My son bought the tank because while shopping he remembered "blue". Even though it is three times larger than Blues living arrangements it's not proper?
I am confused by filters though.
Now I need to upgrade without having to invest in hours of cleaning weekly?

  65. I want to breed my pinapple longfin betta he's peach in color to a black orchid crown tail female…. can I somehow predict the way their young will look?

  66. I have a female betta fish that often changes colours. When she is scared she become white and blue in colour. When she see's herself in the mirror she becomes neon blue and when she is happy she becomes neon green colour.

  67. I have a female betta fish who's tail colour often changes. When she is scared her tail gets a dark blue and white colour. When she starts flaring her tail gets a neon blue colour and when she is happy and alone her tail gets a neon green colour.

  68. Hello!

I absolutely love fish. I have three tanks in my house as of now and I'm so happy with it all. I have one 29 gallon semi aggressive, a 6 gallon tropical and a small betta fish tank. I just picked up a betta fish today and I was looking up a lot about bettas and then I noticed how different mine was from many others. He is a double tail but I can't figure out his coloring. His body is almost pure black except for this reallyiridescent green etching under his scales. On his fins its black but there are brilliant shimmering flares of green and blue near his tail. I don't know what you would describe his color as. Thank you so much for your help!

  69. My betta has a solid light blue body,a completely red crown tail, and a dark blue mask. This counts as a multicolor correct?

  70. Hello! This is an awesome site! It helped me alot before buying a betta fish though i havent bought any betta fish yet. But can u tell me which is the best and beautiful betta fish among all. I'm thinking to buy rosetail but ive heard of tail bitting by rosetail betta.

  71. Hello! this site helped me alot before choosing a betta fish.I just want to know which the best and beautiful betta fish? M thinking to buy rose tail betta but ive heard of tail bitting by rose tail betta fish.

  72. Hi Sarah,
I just got a new betta yesterday. He is my second one and his name is Ollie. I was just wondering if you could help me with his type. I got him from Petco and they said he was a Butterfly male. If he is a butterfly, does that mean he will change colors like a marble betta? I just wondered if that is what you mention by " Butterfly is a marble trait. This site is awesome, Ally

  73. So I have a crown tail and the base color I guess is blue and his fins are like dark blue and turn green/turquoise and at the tips they become red And it's bottom fin? Is red also…idk what color pattern he belongs to

  74. I just got a beta. It's labeled as dumbo Halfmoon. Seems like the tail isn't a Halfmoon though. But my fish is a cross between an apricot color with purple and white mixed. Also it has the pineapple scale effect you mentioned. I wondered what I got. lol. Any way to send you a photo for an id? Thanks! – Jenn

  75. Love your site. I'm planning on breeding my mustard gas male who has a blue body with my female that I got a week ago from California and I think she s a mustard gas but her scales on her body have a yellow brown undertone with a purple shimmer and her fins are the same yellow brown with purple lines through them. What do u think I would get from the breeding? Its gonna be my first time breeding but these aren't my first bettas. I currently have seven and proper tanking for them all. I've had three die in the past although they all lived long lives. 3+ years. So Im familiar with adults and I've read a ton about the babies and I think I'm ready. Is it a good idea to breed and sell and what colors do u think I'll get?

  77. Is a 5 gallon sufficient for a normal sized betta? Can I put 3 pygmy copies in with him? Or any other fish ?
The tank currently has a female guppy and 3 assassin snails (keeping the cycle going) but I have 26 gal guppy tank I can move the guppy to. I'm just trying to think what I can do with the 5 gallon… A betta seemed like a good idea but I want to do more than one fish… shrimp may be an option but they always seem to die a few weeks after I get them… 🙁

  78. i had a fish that was like copper chocolate and like a salmon pink colour. was it actually pink or did it just look pink because of the other colours mixing? i dont remember what type of betta it was but it was probably a delta

  79. I was on this site trying to figure out what my betta who died yesterday was. I bought him as a half moon but his tail was separated so I think he was a two price. At least I'm pretty sure that's what you called it. But his colors didn't fit your color styles. He was blue with white fins flecked with blue then random scales where white(his body was blue and his fins were white) then in a sploch across his head was white. He eventually turned all blue, but not a blue you had either. It was dark blue. If you want reply your email and I'll send pictures.

  80. Hi,
I love your site! Very informative 🙂
I'm interested in finding out what kind of Beta I have, I think he is a Delta or a Rose. His dorsal fin is very long it just flops over it never really stands up.
I don't have any social media, how can I send you a picture?

  81. HI, how would I know which one is male or female because I like to be able to buy 2 & be able to breed Them?
Thank you very much if you can help answer my question.

  88. Hello Sarah, I was looking for a site for Betta identification and found you? Your site is so comprehensive and I wanted to send pictures of my Bettas for identification. I had ny first betta Electra for 3 1/2 years. He just passed. Funny not really I saw another the day before that's was so beautiful and different and he called to me to take him home so I did of course. We named him Angel.I had planned to introduce him to Electra in the morning but when I went to say goodnight he swam up to me blew a bubble then floated back down which I thought was odd but I thought he was going to rest and sleep too. In the morning I always look over at him on my table as usual to say good morning. He usually swims over to me but didn't I looked for him and found him between rocks and glass with his snail buddy on top of him. I screamed and cried my Electra was gone? He didn't get to see Angel. In fact my daughter in law name my new Angel because he would help me through my lost of Electra. I wanted to send you a picture of them but didn't know how. We had a funeral and buried him in my front yard with my mums! I hope you still answer questions I didn't see recent post! Be well….Evelyne

  89. Thank you for this site! I now know that I have a steel blue veil tail betta. Who is gorgeous, might I add.
I also have a betta problem. My betta is seriously bored and none of the traditional toys interest him! ( mirrors, ping pong balls, etc.) I really love my betta and don't want him unhappy!
I know you don't usually answer this these types of questions, but I need advice please.

  90. Hi, I know this article is old but I'm curious now… Recently purchased a crowntail betta from Petland. His face and half his body is black and it sort of fades to steel blue. His 2 little front fins on the bottom are bright red, and his tail is steel blue, but the ends of his tail fade into black. I have no idea what this type of colouring would be called! Can anyone help??

  91. I just got a female baby betta and right now she looks like a comb tail with Cambodian coloring but who knows what she will look like when she's grown.

  92. Thank you for doing this! This helped me a lot for school! I loveeee the rosetail and I have a male red and blue veiltail. 🙂

  93. Thank you so much for making this! This helped me a lot for school! Again, thank you very much. (sorry if this message repeated) I have a male red and blue Veiltail and I love the Rosetail 🙂

  94. this is amazing! I have been trying to breed betta fish. I had a male double tail betta that a named Gale and I bred him with a female veil-tail betta (Katniss). The bubble nest was to small and they did not pick up the eggs and katniss ate them. Four days later, Katniss died. I thing that she may have been over stressed or maybe gale had given her internal injuries. What do you think? Can you help me with my betta breeding hobby? I desperately need some help. I don't want any more fish to die at my hand. If you can help me please replay to me. Thanks so much!

  95. Hello,
I was wondering if specific Betta breeds make taking care of them easier? So is there a specific Betta Breed that would be easiest to take care of? Thanks 🙂

  96. I have too many bettas and don't know what to do. I had 3, to start with but have 18 now.

I work at a pet supplies only store and the fish store near us has been telling people they can put bettas together. So of course upset people come into our store with dead or dying fish demanding answers. Of course I tell them they can't. Put two bettas together regardless of grnder. Do eithet they need to get rid of one fish or buy a seprate tank. I often get given one of the bettas due to many people in the area being low income and unable or willing to buy another tank.

Some bettas die shotly after being in my care but a large percentage of them survive. Now with tons of bettas and I myself with low income (Im a cashier in retail) I have them in make shift tanks like buckets and mason jars. They all have at least a air bubbler thing but I feel bad for them.

No fish store or pet sore near us will take them. And all those multi divided betta tanks cost a lot. Any suggestions on cheap diy tanks or places I could sell some of these fish?

    Thanks, libby

  97. This blog helps me! And now im so interested to buy one but i wont buy a betta fish like CT or HM. I jist want a simple but beautiful Veil Tail type

  98. Thanks Sarah for writing this!
My past Betta, Casper had black that crept on his fins, and i thought he had fin rot. But it turned out he was a pinapple! He was a beautiful Celophene, until he grew the black and started looking "ugly" But now i am so relived that it was just coloring!
Again, he was my Betta unfortunatly he passed away 🙁

  99. Thank you for taking the time to list all the various betta's I found it informative. Also, is one able to determine the age of a betta? Again, enjoyed the pic's and information!

  100. hello, am I late? just found your site! SUPER USEFUL! so I have a non-transparent divider in a 1 gallon tank for a red male betta and a Cambodian female… I wanna breed them, the male has made a bubble nest, and the female is ready. but can I just remove the divider and when they stop, do I just put it back? do I have to feed them a certain diet before they start breeding? please help me with a step by step instructions please!!! thank you sarah! I love you, you helped soooooooooooooooooooooooo much!

  101. I have Two Delta tails one is very happy and healthy. The other has closed all its fins very tightly together. I noticed the issue and started doing crazy research. They now are in a filtered heated tank. He seems to be doing better now. Could this strange occurrence have been because he was cold not enough water movement? I was always very successful in raising betta while in California now I live in Alaska and I had to change everything! I have images of the betta but it wont let me post here.

  102. I have a tru white opaque long tail. Thank you so much for this site. Didn't know my beta's color was so hard to come by without impurities 🙂

  103. i think my male veiltail would be considered cellophane, but it has some small black/grey markings from behind its gills up until halfway down its body on either side. are these stress lines or is it just a part of his pattern?

  104. I love this site! I have a pretty elephant ear male who has white fins until he gets grumpy. I have never seen a fish change color so much. His fins will turn red when he is grumpy with me. I could also use some advice. I picked up two crowntail males 2 days ago from walmart. Normally I would never buy fish there but these poor guys looked really ruff I thought one of them was dead, they could see each other and had obviously been trying to fight. They are in small tanks till this weekend when I finish my 20 gallon with dividers for them. My concern is that the little white is still so bruised and torn up I'm not sure if I should transfer him to the big tank when I get it established or if I should leave him in the 1 gallon till he heals? And before anyone says anything I know one gallon is way to small I keep them set up for cleaning and in case I have an issue with my big tank.

  105. Hello. I don’t know what betta fish is have. His name is luner and has a copper color. His tail is ruffled along the edge. When i got him the pet shop cup said he was a halfmoon betta.but he dose not have the full tail like one. I want to know if he is just young or is a different lind of betta.

  106. I think mine is a crown tail. He’s a combo of royal blue and crimson, but I don’t know what you would classify his color as.

  107. Hello I got my Berta a week ago and is in a tank with neon tetras ( 4 of them ) the tank in 8 litres could the tetras be nibbling at the tail of my betta ( its names ash ) Plz help also is a blue red colour and the fins are not one big one ok by
